Camping in the UK – Rules That You Should be Aware Of

If you love the greenery of the woods, the noises of the forest and the sound of the gushing waters nearby, camping is ideal for you. Picking a campsite during your holiday in the UK is not a very difficult task. However, there isn’t much fun in camping on fields with 20 other families in a much commercialised setup. The true fun of camping is the wilderness although a larger group is required to ensure safety. Spending your holiday in UK watching birds in early morning hours, tracking wild animals or fishing in streams could be far better than a mundane campsite. But there are rules which will stop you from putting up your tent just about anywhere you like. The rules are different for camping in England, Wales or in Scotland. Here are some of the things you should double check before camping wild.

1. In Wales and England, people don’t have a natural legal right to camp wherever they want. This means that, however difficult or impractical it may seem, you have to find out about the right authorities and seek written permission to pitch up. Places like the Peak District ban people from camping on dry moors. On the other hand, if you head to Snowdonia or Lake District or other such places, you can camp in the wild without many hassles.

2. There is an explicit rule in Scotland where people have a right to camp wild on hill land, although it must be more than 100 metres away from the road.

3. In places like Dartmoor, England, there are explicit rules that people should try to find out more about before deciding to camp. For starters, wild camping is prohibited for more than two consecutive nights at the same place or on lands which are allocated for parking of vehicles.

4. There are many places where wild camping is allowed but the campsite itself is not accessible by cars or other vehicles. In fact, many people choose to pick a wild campsite or farm where they can rent some place in a corner from the landowner himself.

5. When you are on a holiday in UK and more specifically in England or Wales, then wild camping is a right in the National Parks with certain limitations. You are in for a great time during your holidays in the UK, camping in those parks and enjoying the woods as long as you stay at least 100 metres from the road and use a tent instead of a caravan. There are exceptions to this right though, which is why it is better to double check before you find your holiday in the UK ending for the wrong reasons.

6. There is some etiquette to be followed during wild camping as well. One of them is to not leave the litter behind and ensuring that your toilet is at least 30 metres from the water source. Burying the toilet waste is mandatory, which is why you will need a trowel.

Youth Hostels Guide

Youth Hostels History

The first youth hostel was founded by Richard Schirrmann around 1909. Schirrmann was a German teacher who organized trips and visits with his students. During one of these excursions, a sudden rainstorm forced his group to seek shelter in an empty school.

It was then that Schirrmann had the idea of using schools that were empty during holidays as guest houses for young people that were travelling in groups in the countryside. The idea caught on very quickly, and by the 1930s there were more than two thousand hostels in Germany.

The idea spread out in the rest of Europe, and after an important international conference in 1932, the idea was exported to the United States and many other countries, and the International Youth Hostel Federation was born, with the idea of providing cheap accommodation for young travellers.

With time, the concept of hostel has broadened, and now hostels accept guests of all ages, providing cheap but comfortable accommodation and a unique atmosphere that cannot be found in hotels.

Hostels Equipment

If you are travelling for a long time, buy yourself a good backpack, which fits you comfortably, and do not exceed in loading it – a heavy backpack can be very painful to carry when it’s summer and it’s hot. Choose comfortable shoes, and keep cool shoes for evenings out.

Hostels most often provide you with sheets (often at an extra cost), but you should bring your own, just in case. Some hostels might not allow sleeping bags, for reasons of hygiene (you might have been sleeping anywhere with a sleeping bag, and hostelling is not the same thing as camping).

Some hostels will provide you with a so-called sleep-sheet, which is two sheets sewn together, so they form a sort of sack. This way the bed stays clean. It is not as common as it used to be years ago.

You should also bring your own soap and towels, since only some hostels provide these, usually with an extra charge.

Hostels Social Life

Hostels are definitely the place for socializing. Since the guests in a hostel are mostly younger people, there are plenty of occasions to get to know other travellers. Some hostels organize parties, meetings or competitions, or have a bar within or just outside their premises where people can meet and chat to fellow guests.

Hostellers are generally more interested in meeting other people than your average tourist, so it’s much easier to get in touch with them, share common interests and exchange advice, tips, etc. Many people travel on their own all over a country or continent more than a year long, and rely on chance meetings to make friends.

Remember: you can always meet people who have opinions (on politics, sex, religion, your country) that are very different from your own, so you must be prepared to be tolerant and understanding other people’s positions and views on life. Without a doubt, this will certainly enrich you and broaden your perspective. So if you go to a hostel, expect to meet new friends, (especially if you speak some languages) and put on your best smiling face. Who knows, you might make the best friendships of your life!

Youth Hostels vs Hotels

There are several types of hostels nowadays, and all of them tend to have their special characteristics; some are more like standard hotels, some are a completely different experience. The main difference is that most hostels offer accommodation in dormitories, or shared rooms. Dorms can be bigger or smaller, can be for males/females only or mixed, but anyway this means that you can share your room with strangers.

Although many hostels now provide private rooms with en-suite facilities, the atmosphere is still very different from that of your average hotel. Whereas hotels only tend to just provide their customers a comfortable place where to spend the night, hostels tend to have more of a social atmosphere which often is derived from sharing dining tables, washing machines, dryers, and much more with with other guests.

Many hostels organize parties and excursions for their guests, and many have a bar where people can meet and get to know each other. In a hostel it is much more likely to start a conversation with a fellow traveller or to be asked for advice, tips and information by someone you have never met before.

Basically, hostels are generally a good place to make friends, to meet people from far away countries with ways different than your own, to exchange tips on clubs, museums, shows, shopping and the like.

Different kinds of hostels

Hostels come in all shapes and sizes nowadays.

City hostels tend to lean more towards the social/fun aspect of city life, offering information about pubs, tours of the city, thrift shops and night clubs. They can be much noisier than country hostels, since they often have no curfew and are open 24 hours a day. The bigger the hostel, and the more night-life oriented the city it’s in, the more social life you will find.

Country hostels are a very different thing. They’re mostly frequented by people who are travelling through the country, possibly walking or hiking. This means people wake up earlier, and go to sleep earlier, and usually like it quiet!

How long can I stay in a hostel?

Some hostels won’t allow you to stay longer than a couple of weeks, since the idea of hostelling is that people are travelling across a country, and not staying in the same place all the time. But many others will not mind if you stay longer: after all, you are indeed a customer! Some hostels will require you to prove that you are an international traveller, since it wouldn’t make sense for a hostel to be full of locals, but this is not too common.

Group bookings

Not every hostel is ideal for group bookings, since some can be small. The best idea is to book well in advance, so you can be sure to find room for everyone in your group.

What kind of facilities are available in hostels?

Most (but not all) hostels will offer a laundry room, telephone, Internet connection, lockers for your precious stuff, and a breakfast service. Some will offer more. Every hostel/hotel in our list has an indication of the facilities it has, so you can be sure to get what you need. If you’re travelling with a dog, remember to check whether the accommodation you choose allows them in!

Do I need to book hostels in advance?

Definitely yes, and that’s why we’re here. Especially during peak seasons, and even more in the most famous cities and resorts, hostels can be fully booked and have no room for you, especially if you’re travelling with many people. Booking in advance is a good idea, since you get rid of worries and do not need to walk across a city with a heavy backpack looking for accommodation. It might detract a bit from the sense of adventure, but you’ll definitely have much more time to have fun!

Is breakfast included in hostels? Can I cook in hostels?

Usually, breakfast is not included in the price, but it’s reasonably cheap and abundant in quantity. Some hostels offer cooking facilities, such as a kitchen complete with pots and everything you need. Other hostels will be more than happy to give you advice about the cheapest bars and food outlets in the neighbourhood.

Age limits

Some hostels do have age limits, and might give precedence to younger travellers (especially Youth Hostels in Europe), or exclude them (if they have a bar in the premises), but most hostels will welcome guests of all ages, and will even accommodate small children and provide smaller beds and cribs if asked in advance.

Curfew

Some hostels will have a curfew, some won’t. It largely depends on the type of hostel, on the owners’ policy and on the location of the hostel (there’s not much use in being able to come to the hostel at three in the night if the hostel is in the mountains!). Many hostels in our directory have information on their curfew policy right in their description.

Lockout

Some hostels might have a lockout period. This is usually around lunchtime or in the early afternoon, and is meant to let the hostel’s staff clean the premises, or if the place is owned by a person, to allow her/him to go out and make supplies, etc. It is not so common any more, so check with the hostel’s staff if you want to be sure.

Dormitory vs Private Rooms in hostels

A dormitory is a room with several beds (often of the bunk type), all of which can be booked individually by different guests of a hostel.

It is also called a shared room, since you share the room with other guests. Dorms can vary from 4 to 20 or more beds, and some hostels have separate dorms for males and females, while others do not make a difference and offer mixed dorms.

Dormitories are always cheaper than private rooms in the same structure, and generally require people to be a bit more adaptable, since your room-mates may go to sleep or wake up earlier or later than you do, have different habits than you, or snore…

But dorms are often great fun, since it’s much easier to get to know fellow travellers if you share the room with them! After all, the loss in privacy is counterbalanced by many social advantages.

While dorms were the default option of most hostels years ago, most hostels now also offer private rooms, which usually have 2 to 4 beds, sometimes even with en-suite WC and shower. In this case, staying in a hostel is very similar to staying in a normal hotel,

Leprechaun Seamus has been missing for a year now. With family members losing hope of his safe return they had begun to plan a memorial service for poor Seamus. His cousin Leprechaun Lorenzo could not accept this and widened his investigations into his disappearance. He decided to re-interview some of the suspects and harden up his interrogation techniques. After learning from CSI’s Horazio drawn out pauses and dramatic one liners… his hard work paid off!

In an amazing feat of heroics today, Barnacles staff member Leprechaun Lorenzo tracked down and rescued his kidnapped cousin Seamus. Seamus was being held captive by none other than evil Barbie who was torturing Seamus to reveal the hiding place of the luggage room keys. Young Seamus fell victim to Barbies evil way and was lured by Barbie by her exotic Irish dancing.

Seamus is very grateful to Lorenzo for the rescue as he had begun to fear for his life!! Lorenzo has been working in Barnacles Hostel since 1993. When interviewed Lorenzo claims he never gave up hope in finding his missing cousin and never thought of the danger he was in as he stormed Barbies hide out. He claims he understands how Barbie fooled Seamus as all Leprechauns have a weakness for Blonde girls doing what he calls ‘lovely irish dancing’.

A big session will be underway as Lorenzo and Seamus base themselves in Barnacles Hostel in Galway for the week and get reacquainted with a few pints of Guinness. As for Barbie she is facing charges of kidnap, assault and Irish Dancing  fraud.

The Basics of Tent Camping

camping
by SeeBeeW

Tent camping is an activity my family has been involved in for many years. Our camping trips combine fishing, hiking, and swimming to the regular camp site life of cutting wood, starting a fire, food preparation, cooking, eating, games, and just relaxing. We’ve made a lot of good memories from our camping trips. We’ve always gone up in the mountains and found great camping hiking spots either at designated campgrounds that offer water for washing, and some type of restroom (out house or rest-stop type), and garbage cans, or places where there were no creature comforts at all. We always camped by streams, lakes, or rivers during the summer months.

If you intend to have a successful camping experience, planning is important. As a retired Army Airborne Ranger, who has had to live out of a ruck (back pack) for many days, having the right camping gear when you’re camping will make the experience that much more enjoyable.
The best camping tents for families are tents that have separate rooms. Since we have two children our tent has three rooms — my wife and I sleep in a room, the kids sleep in a room, and the entrance room is for dressing and storage. We use a combination of foam and inflatable mattresses. We use rectangular sleeping bags that you can zip together for the wife and I, and the kids have their own individual bags. Bring extra blankets for chilly nights. We also use poncho liners for the kids to use inside their sleeping bags. We’ve had our tent for over 15 years and average 2-3 camping trips each summer.

We also take a couple of tarps. We use one tarp on the ground under the tent and make it long enough to have about 8 feet in front of the tent door. We take our shoes/boots off outside to keep the inside of the tent as clean as possible. We bring a small folding stool to place outside the tent door to help with putting shoes on. The second tarp is used to cover our kitchen/cooking gear if it rains.
We use two camping stoves – one uses propane (which we mainly use for heating water for hot drinks and washing) and the other is a 2 burner stove and uses fuel, which does not burn as hot. We use this one for cooking bacon, pancakes, eggs, etc. Bring a couple of frying pans, and camping pots/pans – remember to bring a spatula if you’re going to cook pancakes or eggs.

We always start a fire in the morning(for warmth) and in the evening, for cooking. Bring a collapsible grate to put over the fire if you plan on laying anything on it to cook or heat up. We make pointed sticks by cutting small branches from nearby trees for the polish dogs or bratwurst – so bring a couple of knives. We cut our own wood from the dead branches and logs you find near the campground. We bring an axe and small saw with a folding blade to get the wood the right size to fit in the fire pit.

Here are the basics of camping gear to bring:
Tent with rain fly, tarp, tent stakes, and hammer
Sleeping gear to include mattresses – inflatable or foam, blankets (poncho liners), and pillows
Cooking/kitchen equipment – camping stoves, folding camping table, frying pans, pots to heat water and cook in, paper plates, bowls, and utensils, napkins, paper towels, wash rags, towels, cutlery, large spoons, tongs, can opener, lighters, tin foil, plastic wash basin, scouring pads, disposable wipes, detergent, plastic storage bags, and trash bags. We pack this in see-though plastic tubs with folding lids. We pack most of our non-cooler food in these types of containers, too.

Fire pit necessities – if you plan on scrounging your own wood from the forest floor – axe, folding saw, gloves, newspaper for fire starting, lighter, a folding grate (campfire tripod), and a folding shovel.

Personal hygiene – soap, wash cloths, towels (dark in color), shampoo and shower shoes (if your campground has a shower), toothpaste, and toilet paper.

Safety equipment – flashlights, lantern, spare batteries, cell phone with car charger, map of the area, first aid kit, compass or GPS, and plenty of drinking water.

These are some of the items you’ll need to have an enjoyable camping trip. After your first trip, you’ll be able to fine-tune your list. Tent camping takes a lot of prep work, but it is so worth it for the memories you’ll always have.

I’ve been tent camping for over 30 years and as a retired Airborne Ranger, I have experience in wilderness survival.  For more information on camping tents and camping hiking gear, please visit us at http://mycampingtentsandmore.com.  We carry a nice selection camping gear from tents to flashlights at reasonable prices.  Check us out.

Every hike is an adventure, but some shatter all expectations. Determination and stamina go head to head with gruelling and deadly hikes to excite and inspire the world of hiking. To whet your appetite, here are some our favourite hiking world records.

The World’s Longest Hike

There is some contention over this record. Whilst technically the Trans Canada Trail –once completed – will hold this record at 13,670 miles, much of it is roadside walking rather than true hiking. At present the trail offers over 9,320 miles of marked hiking. The longest trail in the USA is the North Country Trail, which runs for 4,600 miles from New York all the way to North Dakota.

The World’s Most Dangerous Hiking Trail

The Huashan Trail, Shaanxi Province, China is not for the faint-hearted. The Chinese Government has recently begun installing safer handholds and walkways, but there are still vertical steps, bald mountain faces and narrow wood pathways to cross.

The World’s Highest Hike

Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is the world’s tallest “walkable” mountain, at 20,000 feet above sea level. Although no specialised equipment is needed, this mountain takes around six days to hike and many die from altitude sickness. It is essential to travel in a group to look out for one-another’s safety.

The John Muir Trail Speed Record

The John Muir Trail is 223 miles of beautiful Californian hiking, starting in Yosemite and usually taking hikers around twenty days to complete. The record, however, is four days, five hours and 25 minutes and the holder is Michael Popov. He carried all his own hiking equipment and had no assistance at all.

The Appalachian Trail Thru-Hike Speed Record

This is 2,178 of scenic wilderness through the eastern United States, beginning at Springer Mountain in Georgia and heading south all the way to Mount Katahdin in Maine. Beginning to end may take three to five months and the route caters well to hikers. The male record-holder is Andrew Thompson, who travelled south in 47 days, 13 hours and 31 minutes. The female record-holder is Jennifer Pharr Davis at 57 days, 8 hours and 35 minutes. Completing the whole trail within a single season is called thru-hiking.

The Best Hiking Trail in the World

Of course this is subjective, but many hikers agree that for sheer breathtaking beauty as well as ease of travel, the Haute Route from France to Switzerland is the best trail in the world. The route begins in Chamonix, is 110 miles long and takes around twelve days to complete, finally ending in Zermatt, Switzerland. There are many rest stops for hikers along the route and little technical expertise is required, allowing hikers to travel through the most scenic vistas the Alps can offer and take the time to appreciate the views without fretting about where to make camp or how much food to pack. Passing from meadows to mirror-still lakes, through sleepy villages and surrounded by majestic peaks, the hike is no easy saunter. But the rewards are utterly incomparable.

Not all backpacks are created equal. There are the basic backpacks that simply carry your books to and from school and then there are the backpacks that can handle the extreme, outdoor elements when camping. Some backpacks are designed to hold special gear such as laptops or mp3 players. What are some of the new backpack styles for going to school? Here are several styles to consider when choosing a new backpack.

Rolling Backpacks

While rolling backpacks are not exactly new, each year they look less and less like suitcases on wheels and more and more like sleek backpacks. With the newest rolling backpacks, the wheels and the telescoping handles are designed to be less noticeable when not in use. However, when students are walking to and from school, they are easily accessible, keeping the stress of a heavy backpack off kids’ backs.

Laptop Backpacks

As more and more students, particularly high school and college students, have begun to take their laptop computers with them to school, new styles of backpacks have emerged which are designed to securely carry a laptop. When searching for a laptop backpack, form should definitely follow function. While there are many attractive laptop backpacks on the market, a laptop backpack should first keep the computer secure, and then it should be stylish. Fortunately, it is not difficult to find one that does both.

Laptop backpacks should be well padded to absorb any shock should the backpack hit the floor while the computer is inside. Higher quality backpacks also have a separate padded sleeve to slip the laptop into before putting it into the backpack. There should also be ample storage for cables and other computer accessories as well as a student’s books. The backpack itself should be lightweight because the addition of the laptop can increase its weight significantly.

Gadget Backpacks

Gadget backpacks are often designed with specific pouches or compartments to carry small electronic devices such as mp3 players or handheld gaming systems. A backpack that is designed to carry an mp3 player usually has a specific compartment for the device and a hole in front of the compartment to allow the headphone cord to emerge from the backpack. This enables the wearer to listen to their music while it is in the backpack. Some mp3 backpacks even have speakers so others can listen to the mp3 player, too.

Backpacks that are designed to carry gadgets like handheld gaming systems also have compartments to hold the systems and a variety of game cartridges. Often, one backpack is designed to hold both mp3 players and gaming systems. A student who is considering a gadget backpack should also make sure that there is ample room for books and other school supplies as well as the right compartments for their gadgets.
Small Backpacks

Many studies have been done on the effects of backpacks on the back, and most studies will say that younger students need a backpack designed to fit them. That means smaller and lighter weight backpacks should be used for students in pre-school through somewhere around junior high (depending on the size of the student, of course).

In recent years, many backpacks have been designed with this in mind, and it is now possible to get backpacks in a variety of sizes. Some of these smaller backpacks also come with designs that interest younger students like cartoon characters, TV and music personalities, or camouflage (both traditional camo for boys and pink camo for girls).

These backpacks are designed to carry just the basics – books and pencils. Sometimes they come with matching lunchboxes that attach on to the outside of the pack.

Sports backpacks

There are now backpacks that are designed to carry a student’s sporting equipment. For example, a backpack that is designed for a student who plays soccer may have a large mesh pocket on the front to hold a muddy soccer ball. It may also have a ventilated section to place cleats and socks.

There are backpacks that are designed specifically to carry baseball bats and gloves and ones designed to transport basketball equipment. For most sports that a student can play, there has been a backpack designed to help carry the gear.

Student backpacks are now designed to do more than cart books and assignment calendars to and from class; they are also designed to cater to a student’s personal interests. A backpack with a pocket for holding an mp3 player is an excellent choice for a student walking to class. If you are into sports, you can find a backpack with enough pockets for holding your sporting gear as well as your books. When choosing a new backpack, it is best to determine what is going to be carried in the backpack, and then find a something designed for those items. Chances are one is out there for you.
